Biography

Tatiana Silva is a Portuguese researcher from Vale de Cambra, Aveiro. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro and a Master’s degree in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of Aveiro. She later completed her PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Aveiro in collaboration with KU Leuven (Belgium).

Her doctoral thesis, Biological Effects of Atmospheric Particulate Matter: Cytotoxicity and Metabolic Alterations in Pulmonary and Neuronal Cells, investigated the impact of air pollution on human health. By integrating in vitro toxicological assays with metabolomics approaches, her work provided novel insights into the mechanisms underlying particulate matter-induced cytotoxicity and metabolic dysregulation in lung and neuronal models (2D and 3D).

Tatiana has been actively involved in multidisciplinary projects addressing the interface of environmental exposures and human health. These include studies on microbial communities in households of patients with chronic respiratory diseases and genetic markers of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). She has authored publications in international peer-reviewed journals and presented her research at major international conferences, including EUROTOX.

Her technical expertise includes mammalian cell culture (2D and 3D models), flow cytometry, genotoxicity and immunofluorescence assays, and NMR-based metabolomics. At IrsiCaixa, she aims to expand her knowledge by applying her background in toxicology and cell biology to biomedical research focused on infectious diseases and immune responses, contributing to interdisciplinary projects that address pressing global health challenges.
