What is HIVACAT?

HIVACAT is a Catalan programme to develop effective vaccines against HIV. Behind HIVACAT is a public-private consortium led by IrsiCaixa Aids Research Institute and the Infectious Diseases and AIDS Unit of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. The achievements of the programme place our country at the forefront of international research in this field.

HIVACAT has the ongoing support of Fundació "la Caixa", the Generalitat of Catalonia’s departments of health and the economy, Fundació Clínic and Fundació Glòria Soler; it was also supported by Esteve Laboratories in the period 2008-2015. This consortium is a novel collaboration between the public sector, researchers and the private sector in the HIV field.

HIVACAT is led by Dr. Bonaventura Clotet, Director of IrsiCaixa, and by Dr. Josep Mallolas, Head of the Infectious Diseases and AIDS Unit of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. The scientific director is Dr. Christian Brander, ICREA Research Professor at IrsiCaixa.

IrsiCaixa and the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona conduct research with some 5,000 patients, who benefit from the rapid application of new treatments developed by these centres as well as from innovations at the international level.

HIVACAT combines the clinical and scientific experience of some 60 researchers trained in internationally renowned research centres, including Harvard University (USA), the Institut Pasteur in Paris (France) and the Royal Free Hospital in London (UK).

HIVACAT’s mission is to develop strategies to prevent and cure HIV and AIDS. It has established alliances with the most important HIV vaccine research reference centres worldwide and participates in projects in both Europe and low-income African and South American countries, aimed at combatting HIV in disadvantaged population groups.
