Detection tools

Detection tools

Until we reach the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, great efforts must be devoted to detecting the maximum number of new cases of infection in order to isolate them and, consequently, prevent new outbreaks. To do this, the scientific community is working on the design of tools that allow rapid, cost-effective and sensitive detection of SARS-CoV-2 positive individuals.
With this objective in mind, IrsiCaixa is developing new detection tests, as well as evaluating and perfecting the sensitivity - the ability to detect positive cases - and specificity - the ability to detect negative cases - of other tests already on the market. The commercialisation of these tests will not only facilitate better monitoring and control of the current pandemic, but will also allow cultural, leisure and sporting activities, among others, to be restarted safely.

Tool to detect antibodies

IrsiCaixa has designed a simple ELISA protocol that allows antibody determination without the need for commercial kits. The protocol, which focuses on the detection of antibodies against two regions of the Spike protein of the virus, allows too be performed in any laboratory and can be a key tool for research use. The results were published in open access at the onset of the pandemic, when there was a worldwide lack of supply of commercial kits to test for the presence of antibodies.

Antigen tests

The IrsiCaixa team has initiated, in collaboration with the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO), the development of an antigen test with saliva samples for the detection of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

In parallel to the development of new tests, IrsiCaixa also participates in studies to evaluate the efficacy of tests already on the market and to improve their design. One example is the collaboration with Nesapor, with whom the efficacy of an antigen test is being evaluated depending on the type of sample used.
