The “La Marató de TV3” funds a cancer research project at IrsiCaixa

The Tissue Virology group, led by Cecilia Cabrera, receives funding to study the bladder cancer

The 2018 edition of “La Marató de TV3” was focused on cancer and received an amazing amount of donations. A total of 15,118,067 euros were collected during this campaign and they have been distributed in different projects with the aim to look for new treatments and improving life quality of people suffering from cancer. One of these projects will be carried out under the leadership of Cecilia Cabrera, Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP) researcher at IrsiCaixa and head of the Tissue Virology group.


43 projects funded by “La Marató de TV3”

192 projects were submitted and evaluated by international scientists, but only a reduced selection of 43 has been accepted. These projects have been chosen based on their quality, methodology and relevance.
The “Marató de TV3” focused on cancer in 2018 because it is the first cause of death in Catalonia among men and, the second one, among women. Every day 28 people die of cancer, which is more than 10,000 a year. “La Marató” has been able to fund research projects studying very diverse topics within the field of cancer.


Bladder cancer

The project coordinated by IrsiCaixa is "Genetic and immune signature to predict the response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with bladder cancer", which has received a total funding of 300,000€. This project will take place in collaboration with Alejo Rodríguez-Vida working at the IMIM Research Institute Hospital del Mar.
Bladder cancer is one of the leading causes of death in men, just after prostate, lung, colorectal and stomach cancers. Spain, which has among the highest incidence and mortality rates in Europe, reports an average of 12,200 new cases per year. Furthermore, incidence has increased in recent years
