HIVACAT, the Catalan Program for AIDS Vaccine Research and Development, has been selected to host AIDS Vaccine 2013, the largest and most prestigious international congress focusing exclusively on HIV vaccine research to be held in Barcelona in the fall of 2013. The selection of HIVACAT as host is an international recognition to the advances that this programme has achieved in the effort to find a vaccine against HIV. According to the scientific coordinator of the HIVACAT programme, Christian Brander, "to host AIDS Vaccine 2013 will help further consolidate the international prestige and relevance of HIVACAT in the map of HIV research".
The promoter of the AIDS Vaccine is the Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise, an international alliance -of which the HIVACAT has been a member since 2010 - made up of more than 30 separate entities involved in an unprecedented collaboration to accelerate the development of an effective cure for HIV / AIDS. Its members include research institutions, foundations and government organizations such as The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The AIDS Vaccine event gathers annually more than 1,000 researchers, community representatives, funders and politicians from around the world to present the results of recent studies of the highest scientific level on HIV. After the 2011 edition, which took place in Bangkok (Thailand) this last September, the AIDS Vaccine 2012 will be held in Boston (Massachussets) and will be hosted by the Harvard Center for AIDS Research and Ragon Institute (Massachusetts General Hospital, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University).
