Dr. Bonaventura Clotet, MD, PhD


Specialized in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. PhD in Medical Sciences in 1981 (Incidence and clinical significance of anti-ENA antibodies in connective tissue diseases).

 

Dr. Bonaventura Clotet received his MD at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) in 1976 and his PhD in 1981 for his investigations on surrogate markers for connective tissue diseases.   

He is Head of the HIV Unit since 1987 and Director of the Institute for AIDS Research IrsiCaixa at the University Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol, in Badalona, Barcelona, Spain since 1993.  He is also President of the Fight against AIDS Foundation, created in 1992. Since 2006, he is co-director of the HIVACAT project for the development of the AIDS vaccine in Spain. Indeed, he is associated professor of Medicine at the Universitat Autonoma of Barcelona.

Dr. Clotet is member of the steering committee of EuroSIDA (multicenter group the study of aids in Europe) since 1994 and his retrovirology laboratory is the reference lab for HIV resistance in Europe through EuroSIDA. He has been member of the Drug Resistance Mutations Group (IAS-USA) during 10 years, until July 2011 and of the Governing Council of the IAS during 8 years, until July 2010. He also participates in the organizing committee and scientific committee of several drug resistance workshops and international AIDS conferences; indeed, he is an active member of the Spanish Expert Commission for the Evaluation of Research projects in the National Programme of Health and national AIDS Programme. Dr. Clotet has been co-chair of Track B for the Barcelona World AIDS meeting 2002.

He has published more than 500 papers in international journals. He is member of the editorial board of AIDS Journal, HIV Medicine, Expert Review of Clinical Immunology, Future HIV therapy and Journal of the International Association of Physician in AIDS Care. He is reviewer for AIDS, JAIDS, JID, Antiviral Therapy, HIV Medicine, CID, Lancet, and Drugs.

In October 2010 he was awarded by the Catalan Health Institute (ICS) for his lifetime scientific career.

In March 2012 he was the co-chair for the 10th European Meeting on HIV & Hepatitis held in Barcelona. In April 2012 he was the co-chair of the 13 International Workshops on Clinical Pharmacology of HIV Therapy held in Barcelona. In May, he organized (together with Charles Boucher, Wei He and Aikichi Iwamotto) the First Asian Conference on treatment of Viral Diseases in Beijing. China. In October, he was awarded by the Catalan Government (Generalitat de Catalunya) with the Josep Trueta medal to Sanitary Merit for his contributions to the research in the HIV field.

He will be the chair (together with Dr JM Gatell) of the AIDS World Vaccine meeting to be held in Barcelona in October 2013.

Dr Clotet’s team is composed by 100 researches working at the clinics and at the lab in the HIV, hepatitis and papiloma virus fields.
