I Congrés Internacional de Biologia de Catalunya: Global Questions on Advanced Biology

09.07.12 - 12.07.12

The Organising Committee of the Global Questions in Advanced Biology Conference is pleased to invite you to participate in this event, "which will be an excellent opportunity to think about the current frontiers in biological sciences and the newly appeared challenges in this domain after the conceptual and technological revolution of recent years". Senior Investigator of the IrsiCaixa's HIV Genetic Variability research group, Miguel Ángel Martínez (Coordinator of the SCB Virology section), is part of the Scietific Committee.

The main aim of this conference, planned to celebrate the centenary of the Catalan Society of Biology, is to promote the interaction among the many disciplines included in biology (e.g. neuroscience, molecular biology, ecology, etc) "to enrich knowledge through different and contrasting points of view".

With this aim in mind, the organisers have planned an "attractive International Conference in which particularly young scientists are encouraged to show their research and discuss the results obtained with internationally reputed scientists".

 Activities:

  • Plenary sessions: by internationally recognized speakers
  • Oral presentations
  • Science workshops
  • Round tables
  • Posters

  • 12/07/2012 - Oral Communication: Evolution of HIV-1 Protease over 14 Years: Fitness Loss or Robustness Gain? - Virology Symposium (Prat de la Riba hall, IEC - 16.30h)

Background: The emergence of resistance mutations to protease inhibitors (PI) of the HIV-1 not only reduces the binding of the PIs to the protease but also decreases the viral replication capacity (VRC). Nevertheless, it remains to be elucidated the long-term effect of HIV-1...

  • 12/07/2012 - Oral Communication: Antiretroviral agents effectively block HIV replication after cell to cell transfer - Virology Symposium (Prat de la Riba hall, IEC - 16.45h)

Cell to cell transmission of HIV has been proposed as a mechanism contributing to virus escape to the action of antiretrovirals and a mode of HIV persistence during antiretroviral therapy. Here, cocultures of infected HIV-1 cells with primary CD4+ T cells or lymphoid cell lines were used to...
